Support of alternative base currencies was added in the times of the block size "civil war" where at some point there have been risk that Bitcoin could have become very unstable/insecure/high fees. As coins like Litecoin have been very similar to Bitcoin and easy to support we supported such coins (also Doge and Dash - was no endorsement).
I am aware of the call for XMR for being used as base currency but due the technical differences this is unfeasible and that was also confirmed from a Monero developer who looked into it. There are some discussions you can read up (don't have the link).
We removed support for the currencies after a while as there has been no markets developed and we did not want to carry the weight for mainainance. In the code we have still traces from that but that does not mean that there are any intentions to go back to that route again.
Monero would be for sure the only interesting coin but as said the technical effort and challenges are extremely high. Multisig on Monero is very different to multisig in Bitcoin.
Beside that with the ideas around the offchain trade protocol the concept of a base currency would not exist anymore and XMR could be traded against anything like USD, EUR or bananas...
