Too convoluted.  From my experience with "the system" (banks, public administration, courts, etc) the saying "Anything you say may be used against you" is, by far, the weapon they most frequently use to go after you.   So if there is doubt and there is the possibility of not saying anything without attracting attention, the best option is always say nothing.
